For most of his life, the teenager has ridden a bicycle to get around town, allowing him to unknowingly build up a ton of stamina. Revolving around Sohoku High School's cycling club, the story covers multiple generations while using its protagonist, Onoda, as its center. Wataru Watanabe's shonen manga debuted in 2008 and is still ongoing, while the anime has skipped the 100-episode mark and has also produced a couple of movies. Uma Musume: Pretty DerbyĬrunchyroll, Funimation, Netflix, YouTube, VRVĭebuting its fifth season in Fall 2022, Yowamushi Pedal has enjoyed a long and successful run. Fortunately, there are quite a few non-car racing anime out there, some of which are amazing. Most seasons do not introduce a new addition to this subgenre, and these releases seem to be growing rarer with each passing year. Ultimately, car racing anime are in short supply. Great Racing Anime (That Don't Involve Cars) Any fan of fast cars and tight races owes it to themselves to watch Initial D. Watching a kid use his local knowledge from delivering tofu for years to outrace seasoned street racers is incredibly thrilling and the series manages to keep raising the stakes through all 60+ episodes of the series. Likely the most iconic racing anime of all time, Initial D is by far the most popular racing anime of all time The show inspired a video game series that spanned over twelve games, an incredibly long-running manga series, and even several movies. Even if mindless action for the sake of mindless action isn’t usually your thing, I totally recommend it to any anime fan looking for a distinct animation style to get behind.Gallop, Studio Comet, Pastel, Studio Deen, A.C.G.T., SynergySPĬrunchyrolln (1st - 4th Stages), Funimation (1st - 4th Stages), Hulu (1st, 2nd, 4th Stages) You can tell the animators busted their asses off to make something so fluid and intense, and it really pays off. JP, like any male anime character with a pompadour, fancies himself smooth and tough but has a long way to go to prove himself. While they don’t have too much depth, the racers are still fascinating in their drive to win no matter what. It’s also paired wonderfully with electronic house music and intense sound editing to amp the intensity.īoth the alien and human characters have distinct designs with endless possibilities. It does everything to make you feel the speed, the jerks, and the spins, and when animation like this sends shivers through my body, it’s doing something right. And the animation ups it by a thousand with the fast pace, wild angles, heavy shadows, and a lot of color. The plot and character are very minimal, but goddamn it is a hell of an adrenaline rush with intense racing, shoot outs, and, of course, explosions. But this doesn’t stop the racers as they prepare for the greatest and most dangerous race of their lives.Īlong similar veins of the Fast and Furious series, Redline is a pure action sports film. Our focus falls on one human racer, JP, as he finally qualified to race in Redline and has high hopes to win. Use whatever car you please and sabotage your competitors as much as you like, just try to not lose or die. In the distant future, the most popular sports competition is Redline, an exhilarating race where there are no rules. Does his team’s hard work pay off? Let’s take a look.
